Why Can Essential Fatty Acids Help Your Animals?
First of all let’s see what Esssential Fatty Acids are.
You probably have heard the term before, as they’re often talked about for benefiting human health. The main components of all fats are the fatty acids which might be saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated.
Essential fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats which are required by the body for a number of reasons, but cannot be made by the body itself, and so instead need to be acquired from the diet.
Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are types of essential fatty acid. They’re thought to offer several potential health benefits including;
- Promoting a healthy heart;
- Promoting joint mobility;
- May help improve mental ability;
- Promoting healthy skin.
But it’s important to have a balanced intake – too much Omega-6 is thought to have a negative impact, and so having enough Omega-3 is essential to counteract this.
Likewise it’s important to have enough – but not too much Omega-3 in a balanced diet as this veterinary research by Lennox and Bauer shows.
There are 11 types of Omega 3 fatty acids, but these 3 are considered the most important:
- Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA)
- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
How Can Essential Fatty Acids Help Your Animal?
Well as with any supplementation or food, individual animals requirements will vary. If you’d like any advice then DO speak to your veterinary surgeon before changing food or buying a supplement. Essential Fatty Acids are often used to horses, cats and dogs (amongst other animals) to help with:
- Heart conditions
- Reducing inflammation
- Wound healing
They are powerful, and so if your animal is on medication always remember to speak to your Veterinary Surgeon before increasing your animal’s consumption of EFA’s.
