Bee healthy – with propolis

Hello 🙂

In this post I’m looking at one of my favourite healthy supplements – Propolis. A lot of people have never heard of it, but it IS amazing!

Even fewer people know that not only can you take it as a supplement, but also your animals can too.

What is Propolis?

It is a product of bees, made up of tree and plant resin, beeswax, pollen and essential oils, all bound together with bee saliva.  Bees use propolis to line and coat their hives, creating an extremely sterile environment.
What does it help?

It is frequently used to maintain health, heal injuries, help immunity and strengthen tissues.

There has been a variety of academic/scientific research looking at the effects of propolis on health. This includes:

Recent trends and important developments in propolis research; Vassya Bankova, Oxford University Press (2005)

Propolis: a new frontier for wound healing?; Simona Martinotti and Elia Ranzato, Burns and Trauma, Biomed Central (2015)

I use Bee Propolis regularly with all my animals if they need it – as I do for myself. I’ve used it for many years and I definitely think it is helpful in many scenario’s.

So how do you take it?

I use Bee Propolis two different ways –

(1) as small “tablets”, which are best chewed rather than swallowed whole for optimum benefit. They can be cut in half or offered whole to dogs (my dogs love them – another tasty treat!), or added to the horses breakfast).

(2) as a cream – combined with aloe vera for soothing skincare.

If you’ve not discovered it – I really recommend it! BUT…… as with any medicine, supplement or therapy it’s essential that you consult a Vet or G.P. before using – especially if you or your animal have an ailment or if are on some kind of medication already.

Have you tried it? Post in the comments!

Until next time,

Regards, Suzanne
